Do Online Singing Lessons Work?

Absolutely yes! When there's personal feedback.

Is it possible to become an amazing singer in only 30 days through online singing lessons? Not likely – is that even what you want?

There’s been an explosion of educational video resources for learning everything imaginable – this now includes online singing lessons. Much of this content is excellent – especially when delivered by a qualified expert with practical and theoretical expertise.

But the challenge is that there is a mountain of content available. How do you find the right piece of content that’s in sync with your level, knowledge, experience, learning style – and direction in which you want travel.

It gets even more challenging with learning how to sing online.

For, your voice is like a fingerprint: unique.

Not only this, but you’re interested in a specific genre with its own special demands in terms of knowledge and technique. You also bring your own background and experience – can a video lesson really work?

That’s why Singdaptive doesn’t start with online singing lessons. It starts with a survey. We want to tell you more about our approach, but you might be interested in just leaping into how it works.

It All Starts with Listening to a Singer's Voice

That’s why Singdaptive doesn’t start with online singing lessons. It starts with a personal process - getting to know your voice. We take the opposite approach to all online singing platforms. Instead of throwing pre-recorded lessons at singers, we pair each singer up with an instructor and begin by listening to their voice.

We also ask each singer questions about their goals, dreams and areas of challenge. All of this is done in easy-to-use exchanges: singers send text and video clips to one of our instructors and receive personal videos back.

Basically, we’re trying to break-down the “problem space” of online singing lessons. Instead of throwing great video lessons at you, we want to have as much detail as possible about your background and knowledge with singing. Not only that: we really want to know where you would like to go.

The goal is to establish your learning path. This plan is different for every singer. Once the singer and their instructor agree on this plan, they work together on all of its areas. They do this work through personal exchanges back and forth. The instructor also hand-picks lessons and tasks from our extensive library of On-Demand Lessons, asking the singer to interact with specific aspects of these lessons, ask questions and send updates. The instructor also brings in learning clips from others on our team – this is because we believe that the best learning happens from more than one instructor.

Singers with busy lives love the process of exchanging personal videos because it is asynchronous: no schedule needs to be kept. You can send your singing and questions in any time day or night – and you can watch and review your instructor’s videos and comments to you any time of day or night! Singers can also choose our standard subscription which sets the learning plan, gives a month’s worth of work and a personal exchange each month to review this work. Or they subscribe to our Premium subscription which gives unlimited personal exchanges.

We give new free account holders three personal exchanges – with no obligation. This is because we believe all singers will be thrilled with this kind of learning. Try it out by answering the question below.

What Does the “Great” of Great Singer Really Mean?

We’d all love to be thought of as a “great” singer. But, let’s pause for a minute and consider what “greatness” really is. At Singdaptive, we have some very definite views about this issue.

First, it’s easy – and perilous – to ride the roller coaster of people’s opinions, so the most important thing is to feel “great” within ourselves about our own singing.

Second, where we are at is never as important as the direction of our travel. It may sound cheesy, but it’s true: “life is a journey, not a destination.”

That’s why, in our online singing lessons, we think of “greatness” as the pursuit of values. That is, as we work to deeply to build values into our lives, this gives us a great feeling of satisfaction.

We believe there are six different values that are worthy of your time and hard work in online learning. And we’ve seen these values at work in the lives of singers, across genres, who have reached the goals they have set for themselves.

Here they are: Vocally Healthy, Performance Ready, Artistically Free, Musically Informed, Audience Engaging and Audio Savvy. Read more about our values here.

These values lie behind the survey questions and are the way we’ve organised our many courses, online singing lessons and free content.

We think that being a “great” singer is making progress in these values – but not all of them at the same time! It’s really about celebrating the values you’ve worked on and focusing on a value to strengthen right now.

That’s why your SingerPath profile gives you a focus area to begin the next phase of your singing development.

We Say NO to These Myths About Online Singing Lessons

There is a fast, quick, easy and painless way to become a great singer.

No. Everyone that we’ve worked with in the music industry – from leading rockers to directors of award-winning choirs – emphasizes the hard work and dedication it takes to move ahead with singing. This is why our online lessons involve many layers and levels. Having said that, there are more and less efficient ways to go about reaching your goals. We’re quite excited by our survey which pinpoints areas of focus for you in your next steps. We think you’ll be quite motivated when you discover that there is an approachable path to reach your goals. That’s why our online singing lesson process starts by getting to know you, your interests and abilities by complete some personal exchanges with an instructor.

There is just one singing system or a single vocal technique method that is better than all the others.

No. We have reservations about online singing lessons that declare that only their trademarked method can serve your singing needs. At Singdaptive we take a multi-disciplinary approach to the singing task. “Multidisciplinary” simply means that our instructors are from the many disciplines that support the singing task – music teaching, vocal coaching, medicine, audio technology, musicology, creativity coaching, acting – and more. In fact, we only work with instructors who believe that it takes a team to support the voice.

There is just one SECRET to unlock your singing potential.

No. Wouldn’t it be great to wake up and realise that we have simply been missing that one simple thing which – if we did it– would make us vocal stars?! Life simply doesn’t work that way. Just think about all the things you are really proud of having achieved. We’re guessing that many of those things involved some hard work at applying a variety of insights. Actually, come to think of it, life would be boring if there was just one secret to unlocking it all! Life serves up something more interesting than that: a variety of truths, insights, techniques and opportunities. Singdaptive is about bringing you a variety of these insights to our online singing lessons and helping you to figure out which ones can make a difference to you at this time.

Online video lessons – alone – are the best way to learn singing.

No. We think you need a lot more than a video lesson from an expert. That’s why all of our online lessons are accompanied by a variety of actions to make sure you really know what has been presented: technique exercises, quizzes, written and oral assignments, and targeted articles for further reading. We also send you free content geared to your level and interests as well: podcasts, articles, and interviews with those we think have something to say to your journey. Having said that, we don’t think you can really move ahead with your singing unless you are singing with others, for others, or in front of others: in a choir, with a band, an accompanist, a teacher, your family or friends. It is also very powerful to sing in front of a voice specialist in a ‘live’ situation – we don’t ever aim to replace that. What we can do is to enrich your singing by connecting you with leading experts in every field of singing in a format where you can follow your own path at your own pace.

Finding just the right teacher is the holy grail.

No. Just think of the many teachers you have had in your life. Perhaps some of these were duds, but many of them likely had something important to contribute to your learning. When it comes to singing, one thing we are passionate about is that it takes a variety of teachers to support your goals. This is because there are so many different skill areas that support the singing task – from technique and vocal health to understanding room acoustics, song-writing, and the value of movement and acting. Would you want a rocker to teach you about a laryngeal message, or a Speech Language Therapist teach you to write songs? You can see where we’re going: we have brought together specialists from all fields to offer lessons – there are even lessons on make-up for performance!

Avoid Sexy Promises in Your Online Singing Lessons

Many sexy promises are made about singing lessons, but we think you’ll make excellent progress by understanding the more complicated truth about these claims:

Sexy Promise #1: Extend Your Vocal Range!

Many of us would like to sing higher. Actually, your vocal range is predetermined genetically – so there isn’t any magic wand that can make you sing higher than your vocal folds will allow. However, many singers don’t access their full range. Our teachers can help with that. But what about singing lower – with power? For some singers, in some genres, it may be more important to strengthen certain parts of the range other than the high notes. It’s really all about harnessing the potential latent in your own voice for every part of your range. Even more important than singing higher – or lower – than you ever have before is singing effectively. Relentless high singing without dynamics, interpretation and healthy technique is not for you. In our online singing lessons, our instructors teach you how to apply your singing to the overall context of the genre and performance – which is unique for every song.

Sexy Promise #2: Increase Your Vocal Power!

Who doesn’t want more “power?” Hold on. Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump have a lot of power – so maybe “more power” is not what it is cracked up to be? Instead of “power” what you really want is vocal control, the ability to sing in a variety of ways without vocal damage when you want to. Vocal control is a function of various muscle groups, resonators, breathing methods, posture – and other factors – all working together. Furthermore, there are similarities and differences as to how this control is achieved in different genres. Our instructors will teach you the variety of ways control is achieved and maintained. Besides, we wish that both Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un were able to exercise less power and more appropriate control of their thoughts, words and actions.

Sexy Promise #3: Build Your Confidence!

Confidence is not something that is built once and then can be left to maintain itself. Confidence is not a “thing” that you have or don’t have. Confidence is not something an online singing teacher can just give you over the airwaves! Confidence is a journey and not a destination. What can really help you to develop confidence is honesty – about the fact that ALL of us are afraid much of the time; ALL of us find it difficult to face certain situations and certain people; ALL of us – even super “successful” singers – get scared. One quote we love is this: “Confidence is about getting the butterflies in your stomach to fly in the same direction.” We think our team of instructors is awesome because they are honest – about their own ups and downs in learning and about the fact that there is no such thing as a “perfect” disposition to achieve before we take the step of singing in front of others. We think that the more you are exposed to this honesty, the more you will accept yourself. This self-acceptance is key to making strides ahead in your singing.

Is it possible to become an amazing singer in only 30 days through online singing lessons? Not likely – is that even what you want?

We think we have the best teaching team in the singing universe. That’s a pretty bold claim, but take a look at their credentials below and see if you agree.

You’ll see leaders of award winning choirs, celebrity pop & rock coaches, medical specialists, trained audio engineers – and more.

FAQ

What’s different with Singdaptive from other approaches?

There are millions of instructional videos out there for singers. What Singdaptive offers is personal guidance for your unique voice through personal video exchanges and tasks selected especially for you by your instructor. What makes us truly unique is that we offer asynchronous learning – this means that you don’t need to keep an appointment and can interact with your learning at any time, day or night.

The other feature of Singdaptive is that your Lead Instructor will be directing you to exercises and lessons from several others on the team so that your learning will transcend the expertise of a single teacher.

What music genres and singing techniques do you teach?

Singdaptive’s Instructor Team is multidisciplinary, so we assign you a Lead Instructor that is an expert in your genre. There are many good singing techniques created by informed singers and researchers. We value the work Janice Chapman, Jeanette Lovetri, Lisa Popeil, Cathrine Sadolin, Ingo Titze and others. In fact, one of these is on our teaching team and we have worked closely with several others.

What we value most are approaches that are not secretive in nature and that are recognized across the disciplines concerned with healthy singing - coaching, therapy, nutrition, otolaryngology, and musicology. The exercises and methods you receive are focused on healthy voice production no matter what your genre.

What does this cost?

Less than the price of face-to-face lessons in your location. At $25 USD a month our Standard Subscription gives you personal exchanges to determine your unique learning plan. You get tasks with exercises, in-demand lessons, actions – with continued check-ins each month with your lead instructor. Our Premium Subscription at $99 a month gives you unlimited personal exchanges with our team of instructors. Singers facing intense needs or wanting a fast-paced learning style start with the premium plan.

You can upgrade, downgrade, pause or cancel your subscription at any time.

Is this for pros or for beginners?

Yes - to both!. If you have just stepped out of the shower and want to share your voice with more than just your golden retriever, we will walk with you into your future.
